What is the origin of Jean-Baptiste Chainé (Johnny Watson) husband of Lucie Roy?
Hello Ron Chenier
Here is some information which makes me believe that Jean-Baptiste Chainé is Johnny Watson.
First it is necessary to take into account the wedding certificate of Jean-Baptiste Chainé and Lucie Roy on whom it is apparently specified that Zéphirin Chainé is the adopted father of Jean-Baptiste. Of more, the wedding act mentions that the name of said Jean-Baptiste Chainé recalls that his true name is not Chainé. See the certificate. Therefore it is confirmed that we are not "blood" descendants of said Bertrand Chesnay Lagarenne.
1. In the parish records of St-Félix de Kingsey I did not find a birth certificate for Jean-Baptiste Chainé.
2. My father Victor Chainé, grandson of Jean-Baptiste Chainé and Lucie Roy always said to us that the true name of his grandfather was Watson and that Chainey of the other family had the reddish-brown hair while we Chainés have the brown hair.
3. They said in time "Chainey the russet and Chainé browns".
4. My mother also said to me the grandfather Jean-Baptiste Chainé spoke English while all the others were French. Then, again and again in researched documents he signed Johnny Chainé. Of which here are some some:
5. During the marriage of his son Wilfrid Chainey and Lumina Bernier he signed Johnny Chainey.
6. During the birth of his son Herménégilde he signed Johnny Chainey.
7. During the marriage of his daughter Lydia still he signed Johnney Chainey.
8. In the marriage of his daughter Aldéa he signed Johnne Chainé.
9. In the marriage of his daughter Léonide he signed Johnny Chainey.
10. The inventory of 1881 in St-Georges de Windsor it is inscribed that Jean-Baptiste Chainé is 37 years old, Lucie Roy his spouse is 36 years old, Jean-baptist (Willie) 14 years old, Wilfrid 13 years old, Olivine 10 years old, Léonide 8 years old, 6-year-old Alvina, 5-year-old Joseph, Aimé 3 years, Aldéa 1 year.
11. During the inventory of 1861 in Drumondville, one took a census of the family of Zéphirin Chainay and the following names appear on the list: Zéphirin, Julie, Arzélie (Ursule?), Zéphirin, Ulile? (Eulalie), Joseph, Aimas? (Emma), Evanie? (Lévanie) Lela? (????)
I travelled to Grand-Ile (Quarantine Island) not to see if I would find information on Irish immigrants but it was unsuccessfully apart from a list containing approx. 600 orphans names and that the name of Johnny Watson does not appear.
I could verify some ships and their passengers but I do not think that it is in the good years and I found nothing.
There you are Ron, the information which I found regarding the origin of Johnny Watson. A sure thing is that Jean-Baptiste Chainé is not born from the marriage of Zéphirin Chainey and Julie Perreault.
I strongly wish that you can find the origin, I would be very happy.
Good luck and thank you for your interest, Raymond Chainé January 9th, 2001.
Research Notes: The following information was received from Raymond Doris Joseph Chainé (13814) concerning the identity of Jean-Baptiste (Johnny Watson) Chainé. It is believed that he was an orphaned Irish immigrant who was adopted by Zéphirin Chené & Julie Perreault.
