Joaquin Antoine Jacques LEROUX, was born on 11 October 1800 in St. Louis, Province de la Louisiane, USA,1,2,3 and was baptized on 8 May 1801 in St. Louis, St. Louis, Province de la Louisiane, USA. NOTE: As the record of his burial indicates he was buried 3 of Aug it could be possible that his date of death would be 30 July 1861 instead of 30 Jun 1861 as some records indicate. Four or five days after death seems a more reasonable time period after death for his burial rather than one month and 4 days.6,5

AN ARTICLE BY HOWARD BRYAN

PUBLISHED IN THE ALBUQUERQUE TRIBUNE 2 DEC 1965

During his lifetime, Antonio Leroux of Taos was considered second to none as a mountain man, guide and trailblazer.
Not even second to his good friend and neighbor Kit Carson.
Leroux knew the country from the Rio Grande to the Pacific Coast, from the Mexican border north to the great Salt Lake like the back of his hand. He guided 4 military and government expeditions from Santa Fe and Albuquerque West to California, his knowledge of the vast and largely unexplored country having been gained through years of experience as a beaver trapper.
He left his name on numerous lakes and mountains in the region, and many of the trails he blazed are now followed by railroads or transcontinental highways.
The Taos landowner, more educated, cultured and refined than most of his contemporary frontiersmen, never captured the public fancy and fame of some of his contemporaries, however, and his life has largely been overlooked by historians and biographers.
This situation has been remedied by a new book, “The Blazed Trail of Antoine Leroux,” written by Forbes Parkhill of Denver and published by the Westernlore Press of Los Angeles. This 235-page book sells for $7.50 per copy, and is the first major biography of the pioneer New Mexico resident.
Joachim Antoine Leroux, for that was his full name, was not a French Canadian as has been generally believed, but was born in St. Louis in 1801 of French and Spanish, and possibly some Indian, ancestry.
He was the first of four children of Helene Josephe and Louis William Le Roux D’Esneval, usually known as William Leroux, and he was born and reared on Rue St. Charles in St. Louis.
His maternal grandmother was the former Maria Rosalia Villalpando, member of the prominent Taos family who had been captured at Taos by the Comanches in the 1700's. She lived for years among the Comanches and Pawnees before being ransomed by a French trader Jean Baptiste Sale dit Lajoie, who took her to St. Louis and married her. They were the parents of twin daughters, one of whom was Antoine Leroux’s mother.
Leroux began his life as a frontiersman in 1822 when he accompanied the Ashley-Henry expedition to the headwaters of the Missouri River.
He came to New Mexico in 1824, probably with a party headed by a St. Louis childhood friend, Antoine Robidoux and settled in Taos.
Because of his Spanish blood and kinship with the Villalpando family, Leroux was accepted at once as a member of the community. Using Taos as his headquarters he began operating as a fur trapper, north into Colorado and South along the Gila river.
Leroux was married at Taos on Nov. 4, 1833 to Juanita Catarina Vigil, the ceremony being performed by the famous Padre Antonio J. Martinez. Upon his marriage he became the principal owner of the 426,024-acre Los Luceros Land Grant, (Note: in fact by an official document the land was only 126,024 acres. Possibly a typo by the author: Howard Bryan) extending north from Taos, which had been given to the Vigils in 1742. It became known as the Antoine Leroux Land Grant.
Leroux established a large Hacienda on this grant, which was to be his home for the remainder of his life.
During the Mexican war, Leroux guided the Mormon Battalion from New Mexico to California, blazing a wagon trail along the way, and returning to Taos in June to serve on the jury which heard the trial of those charged with treason in connection with the Taos Revolt in 1847.
During the 1850's Leroux guided the Sitgreaves, Bartlett and Whipple survey expeditions between New Mexico and California. He narrowly escaped death in Arizona on the Sitgreaves expedition when he was ambushed by Indians and suffered severe arrow wounds in his head and wrist.
He died at his home in Taos on June 30, 1881 of “asthma complicated by spear wounds,” apparently the wounds he suffered 10 years before on the Sitgreaves expedition.
Mr. Parkhill writes that Leroux was accorded the rare honor of being buried in the nave of the parish church at Taos.
This church, damaged by fire several times, was torn down in 1960, Parkhill writes, at which time bulldozers uncovered the bones of several persons within the church walls, and which were assumed to be the bones of priests.
The Leroux Grant later came into the hands of a London, England, syndicate headed by Sir John Lubbock, at which time it had been reduced to 56,428 acres.
Other frontiersmen playing important roles in the book narrative include Kit Carson, uncle Dick Woolton, Lucien B. Maxwell, Ceran St. Vrain, Bill Williams, Pauline Weaver and Thomas Boogs - although the latter was never governor of New Mexico as the author states.8
