St. Catharines, ON, Canada

St. Catharines was historically the county seat of Lincoln County, but it is no longer part of Lincoln County. Lincoln County was formed in 1856 and St. Catharines became its county seat in 1862. However, St. Catharines became a city in 1876 and was separated from Lincoln County at that time. In 1970, the County of Lincoln and the County of Welland were combined to form the new Regional Municipality of Niagara.

Named in 1809 in honour of Catharine Askin Hamilton, first wife of Robert Hamilton. Post office dates from 1817. Sometimes spelled St.Catherines in early records and postmarks and still today frequently misspelled St.Catherines.
