Derived from Gaelic "strathan", "a valley", and "ruadh", "reddish". Incorporated as a town in 1870. Originally Strath Valley or Red Valley, it was named about 1832 by John Stewart Buchanan for Strathroy, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
