The community was named for the Duke of Cumberland. Former and merged community names include:
· Foubertville
· Osborne
The community was founded, as a township, in 1799.
In 1969, Cumberland became part of Ottawa-Carleton, a regional municipality.
In 1999, Cumberland became a city.
In 2001, along with a host of other communities, the former township of Cumberland was amalgamated into the city of Ottawa.
