Coniston was established by the Mond Nickel Company (later INCO) in 1910 and became a town in 1934. It later became part of Nickel Centre, a descriptive name for the town founded by International Nickel Company which was established in 1973 as part of the Regional Municipaliity of Sudbury by the amalgamation of the town of Coniston and the townships of Neelon, Garson, Falconbridge, Dryden, and MacLennan.
