Officially the city is known as Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. This is a combination of an industrial name (for Valleyfield Paper Mills, Edingurgh, Scotland) plus that of Charles Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry (1778-1829), who commanded the Canadian forces at the Battle of Châteauguay on October 26, 1813.
