Originally with the MicMac "Lustagooch" - the exact meaning has been lost; however, probably indicates "good river". Both spellings have been used from the earliest times: Restigoch (Jesuit Relations, 1642); Ristigouche (Denys, 1672); Restigouche (Des Barres, 1778).
