The term "val" is a french generic meaning "vale or valley" (Armstrong: 291). However, Val Caron wasn't the original place name applied to this community. The preference when the post office was establised in 1944 was for 'Bisillion', but the name was turned down by the post office as too hard to spell. This contradicted the normal right of postmasters to name office after themselves. Eventually the name Val Caron was agreed on. The name honours Fr. Hormisdas Caron, the first french missionary in the district.
